The City of Boise is seeking several three-month, 20-hour-a-week, paid Summer Policy Interns to serve within the Office of the Mayor and Arts & History. The Summer Policy Interns will have the opportunity to support the city’s policy programs, moving forward with Mayor McLean’s vision for a City for Everyone. The positions are designed to provide the candidate with direct experience and the opportunity to move forward with the Mayor’s key strategic priorities in housing, transportation, climate, economic development, and community engagement.

This position is designated as At-Will.

Housing– The intern will be doing local and national policy research on how cities can partner with faith communities in exploring whether the development of affordable housing on their properties is an option and putting together a proposal for opportunities that may be open to the City of Boise.

Economic Development– This intern will work on a creative economy focus, including working with Arts & History staff. Activities could include:

  • Creative economy asset mapping, with a focus on venues (broadly defined – e.g., performance venues, gallery space, public spaces, and areas that could be used particularly by emerging artists and performers)
  • Occupational data research related to creative occupations – this could include primary research, looking at how other cities define creative occupations, and analysis via datasets, such as the Creative Vitality Index
  • Working alongside branding consultants on how we communicate what our creative economy is as part of our broader economic development strategy

Community Partnerships - Seeking an intern preferably familiar with social determinants of health. Research project into what other cities are doing related to youth mental health support and substance abuse treatment. This includes identifying staff supporting the work in other cities, contact information, types of programming, if there are theories of change developed, what funding has been allocated, and what the funding sources are. The intern may help to prepare for stakeholder meetings and build communication channels.

Community Engagement/Social Media– Interns will be responsible for assisting in a range of social media tactics as they apply to the City of Boise's vision, mission, and values. Their duties will include researching, tracking campaign analytics, creating engaging social media content and captions, and aligning with the city’s brand guidelines and voice.

Arts & History – The Cultural Sites interns will work at Erma Hayman House and the James Castle House. Hours are flexible, but interns would be expected to work Fridays and Saturdays during open hours (11-5) and to staff special events. This opportunity is designed to conduct community outreach with under-represented communities in Boise, encouraging their use of this community space and working to build partnerships with the City of Boise.

Required: Upper-division Undergraduate or Graduate student (degree-seeking) enrolled in an accredited college or university. Interns are required to be residing locally during the internship period. Proficiency in MS Office products, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Access. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to work independently with general guidelines under minimal supervision.

Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training: Students who are enrolled in Idaho colleges or universities.Successful completion of public policy coursework and/or a focus on policy research. Ability to use sound organizational skills, participate in various tasks involving multiple levels of a large municipal organization, and work collaboratively with staff and management at various levels of the organization. Successful candidates for these positions will be self-motivated, inquisitive, and reliable.

Work includes the sensory ability to talk and hear. Work in this position also includes close vision and distance vision. Employees will sit, stand, and walk.

Working Environment: The work environment will include inside conditions and outdoor weather conditions.
