Job Summary:
PIC Group has an excellent opportunity for a Senior Technical Writer that will have responsibility to develop technical documentation for a diverse portfolio of power generation assets across the island of Puerto Rico. The Senior Technical Writer reports to the Project Manager and will be stationed at their home office, have frequent visits to Puerto Rico and potentially reside in Puerto Rico for the term of the project. The Senior Technical Writer will research, organize, and produce highly technical documents that follows PIC Group’s methodology, philosophy, and standards. The Senior Technical Writer’s work product plays a vital role in support of the operations personnel and is responsible for performing field validation and quality checks against as-built systems and equipment. The Senior Technical Writer has a strong technical background and is proficient with the use of various software platforms that are leveraged when developing complex procedures, diagrams, and technical materials for use in the field to operate, control, maintain, troubleshoot, program, or repair equipment and systems. The Senior Technical Writer will work independently and possess solid communication skills for coordination with clients, manage project document creation, and lead regular meetings with key stakeholders.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Write technical documents for power plants including installation, start-up, operating and maintenance procedures, and manuals.
- Study drawings, specifications, original equipment manuals, and other data relative to the operation and maintenance of engineering facilities to integrate and delineate technology, operating procedure, and production sequence and detail.
- Develop, as needed, and adhere to consistent style and formatting guidelines defined by company and department standards.
- Confer with customer representatives, vendors, plant executives, or publisher to establish technical specifications and to determine subject material to be developed for publication.
- Coordinate with various departments & organizations during procedure development and revision process.
- Plans layout of work, arranging sequence of topics, and placement of graphics as applicable
- Select photographs, drawings, sketches, diagrams, and charts to illustrate material.
- Observe production, developmental, and other engineering activities to determine operating procedure and detail.
- Organize material and complete writing assignment according to set standards regarding order, clarity, conciseness, style, and terminology.
- Draw in field sketches to illustrate specified system layout.
- Edit, standardize, or make changes to material prepared by other writers or establishment personnel.
- Maintain records and files of work and revisions.
- Maintain Technical Library, including gathering and sorting source and background materials.
- Develop or maintain online help documentation
- Review published materials and revisions for changes in scope, format, and content.???????
- Analyze developments in specific field to determine need for revisions in previously published materials and development of new material.
- Manage project document creation and update requests, leading regular meetings with key stakeholders.
- Expands product knowledge through continuing education in documentation specific industry technology as well as the technology of the products. Maintains familiarity with customers/target audiences and their documentation needs.
Job Requirements:
- Strong working knowledge and ability to read blueprints, schematics, and interpret Engineering documents: Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID’s), Electrical One-Lines, Product Manuals, Logic Diagrams, etc.
- Proficient across various disciplines mechanical, electrical, and controls preferred with a wide degree of project ownership and flexibility is required.
- Skilled in technical writing and use of Microsoft Suites when developing technical materials.
- Adept in collaborating with customers, programmers, engineers, operators, maintenance personnel, and subject matter experts during document execution phase to ensure the product matches overall project scope.
- Strong attention to detail and written communications skills.
- Ability to Independently research, develop, and review new procedures and changes to existing procedures.
- Proficient ability to simplify moderate to complex technical topics for lay audiences.
- Ability to assess client documentation needs and then develop/write, deliver, and implement documentation rollout as required.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work at Desk for extended periods of time.
- Ability to perform system walkdowns at Client facility, including climbing stairs and wearing proper personal protective equipment.
Education / Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED with 4 years military training, preferably navy nuclear.
- 2+ years of operational experience in heavy industrial or power generation is required.
- 5+ years of experience in technical writing and the use of Microsoft Suite for technical writing applications.
- Degreed Engineer, PMP Certified or a degree in business administration is a plus.
- Experience in the use in technical writing software applications such as AutoCAD is a plus.
- Fluent in reading and writing in Spanish and English.
