J&J Snack Foods has an immediate need for a Safety & Quality Assurance Manager.
Position Summary:
We're looking for an experienced and talented individual to be the Safety & Quality Assurance Manager. In this role, you will provide leadership for the plant by establishing a safety & quality strategy, developing/strengthening our internal safety & quality culture, and driving continuous improvement of existing FSQA/EHS programs to meet JJ Snack Foods corporate standards. This position works closely with operations, maintenance, R&D, plant leadership and Corporate FSQA/EHS Teams in achieving goals, objectives and KPIs; and manages the facility FSQA team, FSQA/EHS systems and programs, sanitation, and product specifications.
Scope: The scope for the role of Safety & Quality Manager covers all safety and quality aspects for the manufacturing plant.
Responsiblities Include:
- Monitor the efficacy of the safety & quality systems via internal audits/document reviews and organizes/publishes data and reports on facility/plant performance against company key performance indicators.
- Interface with regulatory, third-party audit certification bodies, those conducting customer audits and keeps abreast of changes/preventive controls required to meet the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA).
- Responsible for ensuring the facility maintains SQF certification (achieving scores necessary to meet customer requirements) and meets all regulatory requirements.
- Provide the necessary safety and quality training, tools, and techniques when changes are made to programs and procedures, when refresher training is identified as a corrective action and at minimum annually to enable others to effectively achieve FSQA/EHS goals/objectives and keep employees safe while delivering wholesome, quality products that are safe for consumption.
- Respond to all near miss findings and customer/consumer complaints in a timely manner by conducting root cause analysis and implementing/documenting appropriate corrective/preventive actions.
- Manage product holds and product dispositions.
- Participate in corporate FSQA/EHS calls to collaborate with other Managers in the JJ Snack Foods network and participate as an audit team member in plant-to-plant company audits as needed.
- Support the Corporate Regulatory Compliance Team with product formulation and specification reviews; and share program information upon request to meet customer inquiries.
- Support sales and regulatory compliance teams by updating product specifications and quality parameters into customer portals.
- Oversee budget and labor expenses and ensures Safety & Quality supplies are stocked and ordered.
Essential Job Functions
- Meet Corporate and Plant safety and quality key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Organize and drive continuous improvement of safety and quality systems/ programs and ensure appropriate reviews/audits are conducted to meet corporate standards, maintain SQF certifications and meet all regulatory and OSHA requirements.
- Active floor presence and safety team building.
- Lead validation and verification activities to support safety and quality.
- Implement appropriate monitoring programs, maintain all documentation.
- Update and implement SQF plan(s) whenever there is a change of program, procedure, ingredient, equipment, technology, or regulatory.
- Lead the process of moving from a quality control minded organization to a quality assurance minded organization while strengthening internal FSQA culture.
- Lead and facilitate the plant in consumer and customer complaint resolution, corrective and preventive actions, and overall complaint reduction.
- Support Operations in embedding systemic corrective and preventative actions regarding internal and third-party audit deficiencies.
- Lead adoption of a clearly defined, R&D systematic commercialization process for new product launches/product process redesigns.
- Support defining plant process capabilities, sampling plans, product specifications & protocols to transition product from R&D pilot to commercial manufacturing (e.g., in-process control points).
- Support translation of product specifications to appropriate manufacturing documentation.
- Lead activities that empower, engage, and involve operators with the information and tools for continuous improvement in facility manufacturing processes.
- Support efforts to ensure consumer-acceptable product is being produced/shipped.
- Lead changes to existing processes/products in response to complaints, customer requests, or cost-saving activities.
- Lead and support seamless exchange of technical and product information between and among unit functional areas (e.g., R&D, plant operations, regulatory compliance) and/or customer.
- Ensure documented training of plant personnel in Safety (e.g., SQF, Food Safety/Defense, GMPs, LOTO, etc.
- Support determination & implementation of product dispositions regarding holds.
- Participate in biweekly Corporate calls, Summit meetings and corporate driven audit program.
- Position supports sales and regulatory compliance teams by updating product specifications and quality parameters into customer portals.
- Position oversees budget and labor expenses and ensures FSQA supplies are stocked and ordered.
- Coordinate injury management through partnership with Human Resources and assist in establishing area injury management resources and relationship building.
- Lead / document plant safety and quality meetings.
- Assist with coordinating, managing and responding to OSHA agency level inspections as directed by the Corporate EHS.
- Adheres to all Regulatory, Environmental, Health and Safety requirements and procedures.
- Position is responsible for all the above and any other duties as assigned by management.
Requirements – Education/Skills/Knowledge
- B.S. in Food Science, Food Safety & Defense, or related field preferred.
- Minimum of 5 or more years’ experience in Safety & Quality Management in the food industry.
- Excellent report writing skills.
- Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal).
- Demonstrated problem solving skills (extensive experience with root cause analysis and CAPA programs).
- Excellent knowledge of food manufacturing processes, safety & quality programs, food sanitation, and process validations/verifications.
- Solid understanding of food safety and manufacturing of RTE foods.
- Experience using a full range of statistical and analytical tools and fundamentals.
- Preferred candidates have a thorough understanding of risk assessments, water activity and microbiology.
- Extensive experience in SQF, ISO, HACCP, OSHA and prerequisite programs.
- Must be HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) and PCQI certified.
- Must be a recognized SQF practitioner.
