As a Mechanical Design Engineer, Wiper Systems, you will be responsible to direct full-service suppliers to design, prototype, validate, release and launch components for current and future vehicle programs.

Requirements/Tasks:

  • Support supplier selection with purchasing by updating templates for Statement of Requirements / Requests For Information documents and performing technical reviews.
  • Participate in the iterative process with the design/styling studio to deliver the optimal balance of form vs. function vs. cost
  • Choose supplier ‘off the shelf’ solutions, either complete or requiring minor modifications.
  • Packaging & layout within vehicle architecture for front and rear wipers, linkages, and washer bottle plus washer hose routing.
  • Confirm components meet targets for craftsmanship, function, cost and weight
  • Manage supplier design including any minor changes, undertand part concepts, datum strategy, attachments, GD&T, and review with engineering lead engineers for approval
  • Familiarity with FMVSS 104 wiper requirements and ECE equivalents
  • Manage supplier to design and release components and final assemblies into the Mullen PLM system for prototype and production BOM releases
  • Seek to understand CAE simulation results (mold flow, aero) and integrate recommendations into product design. This includes small plastic covers designed for aerodyamics or appearnance.
  • Approve tooling designs and create Mullen plant assembly instructions
  • Support overall vehicle development milestones and prototype/production build events
  • Manage the team through the Program Development Team (PDT) process, with open isssues and drive timely cost impact quotes from suppliers as needed.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional OEM teams, Manufacturing Engineering and Procurement groups to ensure system manufacturing and assembly feasibility and serviceability.
  • Responsible for technical documentation to include DFMEAs, DVP&R’s. Deep-dive CAD structure to identify and fix and positioning errors & variant errors

Experience

  • 0-3+ years of experience in vehicle design & development. This may include university vehicle projects for entry level candidates. This includes design related experience with at least some of the following areas:

o Electro-mechanical components

o Metal or plastic part design and fabrication, including 3d printing

o Driver controls

o Water managment components

  • Proven experience creating CAD to existing vehicle parts, or packaging existing CAD models in CATIA V5 or other solid modelling system.
  • Vehicle project or vehicle launch experience preferred
  • 0-3 years of classwork or experience in plastics design, injection molded tooling, CAD design, electromechanical systems.
  • Familiarity with Geometric Design and Tolerancing, Fasteners, and routing of wires and tubes in a vehicle.

Education

  • Bachelor of Science (minimum) in Mechanical Engineering or relevant engineering discipline.
  • Advanced Degree is advantageous
