The Brandywine Red Clay Alliance (BRC) is the oldest small watershed association in America, working to protect 325 square miles of rolling hills, woodlands, farms and suburbs in Chester County, Pennsylvania and
New Castle County, Delaware. The mission of BRC is to promote the restoration, preservation, conservation and enjoyment of the natural resources of the Brandywine and Red Clay Watersheds through education, scientific activities, environmental stewardship and advocacy.

At camp we inspire an appreciation and knowledge of the natural environment by getting outside away from modern day technology. Children unplug from electronics and plug into nature.

Job Description:
The Summer Camp Education Intern will assist in all aspects of BRC’s nature camp which features engaging and innovative outdoor adventures for children ages 4-15. Our camps run for 9 weeks in 2023 (the last week is optional). We have 3 sites that we run camps at: the Myrick Conservation Center (outside of West
Chester,PA), the Chandler Mill Nature Preserve (located in Avondale, PA), and the Saalbach Farm (outside of
Coatesville, PA). BRC does not provide intern housing.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead off-site field trip programs, including canoeing, kayaking and tubing
  • Participate in a five-day camp training course, June 19th - June 23rd, 2023
  • Assist with the set-up/wrap-up and daily operations of 8 weeks of camp June 12th – August 11th, and if possible August 14th – 18th
  • Provide leadership for the camp’s before & after care programs; train junior counselors to lead before and after care choices (game, craft or reading)
  • Complete internship project (Develop and organize programming for Saalbach Camp & Chandler Mill

Nature Preserve)

  • Serve as the adult leader for 1 overnight and 5 cookouts at the Myrick Conservation Center
  • Create visual and print media ie. weekly newsletter
  • Serve as supervisor for before or after care, developing games and activities; you will also serve as senior staff on-site when BRC office is closed
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • College/university student or graduate in good standing
  • Pursuing a degree in education, environmental science or related field
  • Experience with children, and creating and coordinating activities for multiple age groups
  • Outdoor enthusiast with experience canoeing/kayaking, hiking, camping and fire building
  • Strong public relations and communication skills
  • Functional knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Responsible, organized and dependable with an emphasis on safety
  • Able to work in a team-based environment, adaptable and flexible
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation

Dates/Hours:

  • May 30th - August 11th, 2023, negotiable based on applicant’s academic schedule (week of August 14th, is optional)
  • Monday - Friday, either 7:30 – 3:30 (if before care supervisor) or 9:30 – 5:30 (if after care supervisor)
  • 1 Overnights & 5 Cookouts on Thursdays (hours will be adjusted for these days)
  • Last minute coverage for before or after care.

Salary/Benefits:

  • Salaried weekly commensurate with experience
  • Optional one vacation week - no pay (must be mutually agreed upon prior to start date)
  • CPR/First Aid Training
