The Northrop Grumman Mission Systems (NGMS) Advanced Processing Solutions Business pushes the boundaries of innovation, redefines the leading edge of exotic new technologies, and drives advances in the sciences. One of our most challenging new fields is Transformational Computing, which combines the unique properties of superconductivity and quantum mechanics to develop radical new energy-efficient computing systems. Our team is chartered with providing the skills to transform computing beyond Moore’s Law, advancing development of computer architectures, processing/memory subsystems, and large-scale high-performance computing systems. You’ll work in a R&D environment alongside a broad array of scientists and engineers to make these processing solutions a reality and deliver remarkable new advantages to the warfighter.

The Systems Engineering group is seeking Thermal Engineers to join our Simulation and Modeling team to perform front-end system design activities and product development. Reporting to the Systems Engineering Lead, the Thermal Engineer will collaborate with research scientists and product teams to perform system architecture and design activities. While the focus is on hardware/software systems, a cross-functional team will be needed that can apply aspects of microwave and analog electronics, digital hardware design, mechanical and thermal design, and environmental control.

This position will serve on-site in Linthicum/ Annapolis Junction, MD.

Responsibilities:

  • Research and implement new thermal management technologies.
  • Develop analytical models to predict thermal performance of cryogenic systems.
  • Design, develop and perform testing on thermal systems operating a cryogenic temperature.
  • Help to design and develop custom test hardware fixtures and testing facilities.

Basic Qualifications for Sr. Principal Thermal Engineer:

  • Bachelor of Science in: Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Structural Engineering, Physics or related field specializing in thermodynamics and heat transfer with 9 year of experience, a M.S Degree with 7 years of experience or a Ph. D with 4 years of experience. Post graduate work will be considered.
  • Working knowledge of thermal analysis software (COMSOL, IcePak, Sinda/Fluint) or similar.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively to team members both verbally and in writing.
  • US Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain TS/SCI security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications for Sr. Principal Thermal Engineer:

  • Design and analysis experience simulating heat transfer within superconducting circuitry.
  • Working Knowledge of cryogenic test systems; dilution Refrigeration, 4 kelvin cryo-coolers, Adiabatic Demagnetization Refrigeration (ADR) and liquid helium emersion.
  • Experience in modeling mechanical structures in; Solidworks, NX or similar.
  • Ability to adjust to changing priorities and requirements.
  • Active TS/SCI with CI/FS poly security clearance.

This position reports to Linthicum, MD, USA, however, this position can also be worked from Annapolis Junction, MD, MD, USA.



Salary Range: $123,800 USD - $194,500 USD


Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
