Harborview Medical Center invites you to be considered for growth opportunities in nursing by expressing your interest in our ICU Training Program. Nurses for these RN (Registered Nurse) positions will receive a structured training program that includes classroom sessions, on-line module components; along with a precepted orientation, which will allow for success in this challenging and high acuity environment.

Harborview ICUs include: Neurosciences (30 beds); Trauma Surgical (24 beds); Medical Cardiac (17 beds); and Burns & Pediatrics (18 beds). Position openings are for individual units, for 90% FTE nights.

  • Currently accepting applications for March 2023, and for May 2023, cohort start dates, for RNs with acute care RN or ED RN work experience who would be new to ICU.

  • (and, separately, specifically for new grad RNs who may be hired for ICU, the next upcoming planned start dates are for April 2023; and then for July/Aug/Sept. 2023).

    Individual openings (and start date opportunities) vary depending upon individual unit hiring needs.

  • Please note - if hired for an ICU position via ICU Training Program - there would be a minimum two year commitment expectation to the unit you are hiring on with.

  • Trauma Surgery ICU at Harborview (9MB) is a 24 bed unit for patients with multi-system, traumatic injuries. Patient management presents challenges in respiratory, thoracic, vascular, neurologic and orthopedic care. Nurses are involved in a variety of innovative research projects. Nurses provide critical care management to multi-service adult patients. They care for patients ranging in a variety of medical/surgical diagnoses and trauma injuries; and are involved in a variety of unit-based and hospital-wide projects.


  • Neuroscience ICU, a 30 bed unit, (2WH) is a major referral unit for neurological surgery and neurology services. The Neuro ICU provides specialized intensive nursing care to patients with complex neurological deficits and injuries. We serve adult victims of severe head and spinal cord injury, diseases and disorders of the brain, spine and peripheral nerves, and a growing elective neurosurgery population.


  • Burn ICU/Pediatric ICU, (9EH), an 18 bed unit, serves as the Regional Burn Center and Level 1 Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center for the WAMI Region serving Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. Comprehensive care is provided to pediatric and adult patients with burn, plastic, trauma, neurosurgery, medical and neurologic injuries.

  • UW burn center at HMC opened in 1974.

  • Verified by the American Burn Association and American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma.

  • We were the first site of a major clinical trial for artificial skin graft.

  • Survival rate for the burn center is over 97%.


  • Medical Cardiac ICU, (2EH), is a 17 bed unit providing acute care for critically ill adult and geriatric patients. The multidisciplinary staff is highly collaborative and supportive working together to achieve the best patient outcomes possible.

  • The MCICU works closely with the cardiac catheterization lab to assist in quick diagnosis and treatment of patients requiring percutaneous coronary intervention. The unit specializes in treating patients with therapeutic hypothermia after cardiac arrest. The unit is the home base of Seattle's Medic One for treatment of patients who have suffered a heart attack. The staff has expert specialized training in ACLS, intra-aortic balloon pump, continuous renal replacement therapy, and transvenous pacemaker. The MCICU also provides care to critically-ill patients with conditions related to multi-system organ failure; gastrointestinal disease; blood infections/Sepsis; cancer; cardiac disease; lung disease; kidney disease; liver disease.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    Requires current WA. State RN License.
    Two+ years of acute care RN experience desirable.

    Please note that if you are a current Harborview RN, and had been initially hired as a new grad RN in med-surg/acute care, then you must have completed a minimum two years on your initial unit as RN. (other commitment timeframes may apply for certain other residency areas).
    If a current Harborview RN, and had been initially hired with at least one year of acute care RN experience, then must have completed minimum one year on your initial unit as RN.

    (entry level RNs may also be considered for ICU training program positions; nursing technician/CNA experience in ICU, and/or senior practicum in ICU desired).
