Position Summary:

The Occupational Safety Manager is responsible for driving and supporting personnel safety, process safety, and OSHA regulatory compliance and related initiatives in manufacturing and warehousing operations. Developing and implementing standard processes and programs that support the safety strategy of Furmano Foods and work with teams across the organization to achieve a zero-incident safety culture. A critical responsibility of the role is to ensure individuals, processes, and systems are operating within compliance of occupational safety regulations mandated by federal and state agencies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee day-to-day work activities related to administering the safety program. Ensure that all team members follow safety practices during work activities.
  • Implement and maintain workplace safety programs to ensure 100% compliance with all applicable federal and state regulations.
  • Maintain a comprehensive total facility inspection, audit, and corrective/preventive action process to maintain regulatory compliance, ensure continuous improvement and facilitate the transfer of best practices across the business.
  • Establish and maintain monitoring, record keeping and reporting systems to ensure a standardized approach to safety compliance. Document and maintain paperwork related to safety including logs, incident reports, investigations, audits, etc. Maintain safety performance communication tools across all levels of the facility.
  • Lead Furmano’s Safety Committee and maintain the Workplace Safety Committee certification through the PA Department of Labor and Industry.
  • Conduct regular and effective committee meetings to assess and inform team members of safety policies and procedures, report performance trending, as well as address any safety/quality issues.
  • Interact directly on behalf of the company with regulatory agencies regarding permitting, compliance, and annual reporting/certifications including certificates of insurance.
  • Drive a zero-incident safety culture through collaboration with the entire Furmano’s team. Be seen as the focal point and expert for safety-related matters –- a partner and team member.
  • Conduct accident investigations and follow-up with all parties involved to ensure that safety policies are followed and understood.
  • Work effectively with human resources team for worker’s compensation management practices such as: reducing injury risks, managing claim costs, and ensuring optimal safety for our team members.
  • Continually seek opportunities to improve the knowledge and skill of the facility management team to improve systems and positively impact the safe operations of the business.
  • Ownership of the organization’s safety training programs including actively performing trainings regularly including the new hire safety orientation process, safety tours, EMR training events, forklift training, LOTO, fall protection, etc.

Qualifications (knowledge, skills and abilities):

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Environmental or Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or related field and five (5) years of progressive industrial safety experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a manufacturing, storage/distribution, or industrial environment. Food industry experience preferred.
  • Certification in OSHA 30 hour or equivalent program preferred. Professional credentials preferred (CSP, CIH, OHST).
  • Candidate must be knowledgeable with federal and state regulations, specifically OSHA 29 CFR 1910 General Industry Standards, Clean Water Act, ANSI, etc.
  • Food manufacturing or food storage/distribution experience preferred but not required.
  • NSC Forklift and Lift Truck - Train the Trainer or equivalent preferred but not required.
  • Strong coaching, training and motivational skills; experience leading a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence cross-functional teams without formal authority.
  • Ability to establish credibility with team members and work effectively with all levels of management.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills as well as proficiency with Microsoft Office Software and data management systems.
