Music Therapy Department Chair

About the Flint Institute of Music

Upholding our mission of “changing lives through a lifelong continuum of dance, music, and theatre”, the
Flint Institute of Music is a place where lives are truly transformed through the power of the performing arts. With a belief in challenging our audience with thought-provoking, emotionally engaging and powerfully imaginative programming, our public performances, school matinees, and classes, serve audiences of all age demographics, with music, dance, acting and theatre-making opportunities for students age 4 through adult.

Celebrating more than one hundred years of service, FIM is dedicated to the growth and cultural advancement of all those within our service area. From its humble beginnings as the Flint Community
Music Association to the institution it is today, FIM is the oldest example of community-planned music in the United States. Influenced by founder J. Dallas Dort, FIM was an early adopter of the concept of music as an integral aspect of community well-being.

With a dedication to improving our community through the arts, all FIM divisions come together in the continued realization of Dort’s dream for community-based arts programming to be accessible to all.
Currently reaching more than 300,000 people annually through lessons, classes, outreach programs, performances, and concerts, FIM is a pillar in the Flint community offering a wide array of performance and educational opportunities through the Flint Symphony Orchestra, Flint Repertory Theatre, and Flint
School of Performing Arts - one of the largest community arts schools in the country.

In addition to our newly evolving Community Education and Engagement department set to focus on increased access and integration across all programs and venues particularly focused on reducing barriers to engagement with Flint residents through such initiatives as Music Around Town, Troubadours,
Learning Through Theatre, Whiting School-time performances, and Virtual Field Trips, our newly upgraded MacArthur Recital Hall and 150-seat mini thrust Elgood Theatre expose Flint residents to high- quality arts & cultural programming that would not otherwise be available. To round out our arts and culture programming, as of July 2021, the James H. Whiting Auditorium and historic Capitol Theatre have joined the FIM family.
