DESCRIPTION

Mendocino College is seeking a full-time, tenure-track instructor to join our Art department as lead Ceramics instructor. We seek diverse, equity-minded candidates who bring new perspectives and experiences to enrich our educational community. Mendocino County, located two hours north of the San Francisco Bay Area, has a dynamic and active community of ceramic artists.

The Ceramics instructor will collaborate with the other full-time and adjunct faculty in the department to provide a rich educational experience to Mendocino College's diverse student body. The Art department offers a broad range of courses in studio arts, art history, and foundational theory courses designed to support students who are pursuing transfer, local degrees, and personal enrichment. The full-time instructors in the department also consult on the direction of the college Art Gallery.

The Ceramics instructor will primarily be located at the Ukiah campus studio. The Ukiah studio features 18 wheels, an outdoor workspace, and 3 gas kilns, 3 electric kilns, 1 raku kiln, and 1 gas soda kiln and 1 pit-firing barrel kiln. It is supported by a part-time ceramics technician who mixes glazes, fires and maintains the kilns, and assists students. There is an active student ceramic club and a long history of community involvement in the clay program. The Ceramics instructor will also provide oversight, in collaboration with the Dean of Centers, to the ceramic classes, facilities, and instructors in Fort Bragg, Lakeport, and dual enrollment locations.

This is a full-time, tenure track position offering a 10-month contract (August-May). The annual teaching load is 510 lecture hours, 680 lab hours, or a combination of the two. The annual work year includes 164 instructional days and eleven professional development/flex days. This assignment may include day, evening, and weekend classes, online instruction, as well as travel to, and instruction at off-campus centers.

SALARY, COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Compensation is dependent on education and experience.

Annual salary offered at $65,473 - $93,931. Step seven (7) is the maximum step placement based on year for year teaching experience or two years of FTE work experience in the field per step.

Benefits: With no monthly premium contribution from the faculty member, we offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes family medical, dental, vision, EAP benefits and employee life insurance. Additional voluntary life insurance is available for employee purchase. Benefits are effective the first of the month following hire date.

Paid Time Off: The successful candidate will earn ten (10) days of sick leave per year.

Retirement: This position is eligible for CalSTRS Retirement. Additional, voluntary 403{b)programs are available.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

The successful candidate will support success by providing instructional support and institutional collaboration. This includes the following duties and/or assignments.

Teaching:
  • Instructs all levels of ceramics, clay sculpture, kiln repair and glaze making as well as a required foundation course in 3-D design;
  • Maintains current knowledge of the discipline and teaching practices;
  • Support students in exhibiting their work through the college art gallery, at the annual CCACA conference in Davis, CA and the annual ceramics sale sponsored by the ceramics club;
  • Provides instruction in accordance with the Course Outline of Record and schedule of classes; utilizes technology effectively to support on-ground, online and hybrid learning; reports on time for classes; posts and maintains student contact hours; prepares a syllabus for each class to inform students about the course objectives, grading plan, assignments, and attendance requirements; develops, maintains, and assesses Student Learning Outcomes; evaluates students' performance; provides students with timely feedback; submits grades and attendance reports;
  • Teaching assignments may include classes at Center locations and/or in other art media as interest/expertise allows.

Department:
  • Attends department meetings; works collaboratively with other art faculty to support the success of art programming and the college art gallery, which provides an exhibition space for students and exposure to contemporary art;
  • Participates in program development and revision;
  • Participates in curriculum development, review, modification, and deletion; provide leadership for overall direction of ceramics discipline across the district
  • Develops and assesses student learning outcomes in the discipline;
  • Participates in full-time and part-time faculty evaluations;
  • May supervise student workers in the discipline and/or temporary staff in the college gallery;
  • Makes effective use of instructional budget for the discipline, submits purchase orders, maintains related records; participates in the completion of program review;
  • Provides input and assistance to the Dean regarding the schedule of classes, schedule changes, and the recruitment and assignment of part-time faculty in the discipline;
  • Collaborates with the campus centers concerning classes in the discipline;
  • Collaborates with the Dean to provide direction to the Ceramics technician;
  • Coordinates maintenance of Ceramics facilities with the Ceramics technician and other relevant college staff.

Institution:
  • Reports prepared and on time for meetings; attends in-service days, commencements, and faculty meetings as scheduled.
  • Completes required flex hours for professional development purposes; serves on college committees.
  • Participates in the processes of shared governance;
  • Participates in activities to create and promote career pathways, including articulation with local high schools and four-year colleges; and
  • Actively engages with program advisory committee.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Office and classroom settings. This assignment may include day, evening, and weekend classes, online instruction, as well as travel to, and instruction at, off-campus centers. Physical demands include sitting, standing, bending, walking, and occasional light lifting (up to 15 lbs).

QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Must meet Human Resources guidelines for qualified hiring; including by not limited to a Live Scan background check and completion of TB test.

Posses an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender/gender-identity, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and willingness to create safe and inclusive learning environments for all students.

EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's degree in fine arts, art, or art history

OR

bachelor's degree in any of the above

AND

master's degree in humanities

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • College-level teaching experience
  • Dedicated studio practice demonstrating engagement with themes in contemporary ceramic; current exhibition record.

KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Contemporary practices in ceramics as well as interdisciplinary collaborative practices within an art department, which includes fine and performing arts;
  • Culturally responsive teaching practices, community college mission;
  • Best practices in arts pedagogy and experience with online instructional technologies;
  • Secondary discipline interests are welcome, particularly printmaking or digital arts and media.

ABILITY TO:
  • Effectively instruct assigned courses using a variety of techniques and methods of delivery, including relevant online instruction;
  • Evaluate and develop curriculum and instructional materials;
  • Assess student academic progress;
  • Develop course schedules; stay current in the subject area through continued professional development and active involvement in professional organizations and activities;

  • Prepare reports;
