A Communications Specialist job is available with the City of Fort Worth Transportation & Public Works (TPW) department. The department is seeking a seasoned, creative communications professional adept in media relations, website content design, meeting organization, and social media development. An individual with a range of experience and a passion for developing, writing, and editing various communications, public relations, training, and marketing materials for both our internal and external customers will thrive in this role. The primary focus of this position will be Capital Delivery, but will also include work with other divisions within the department, including Transportation Management, Pavement Management, Regional Transportation & Innovation, and Street Operations.

This position will require candidates to be flexible to attend off-site, outdoor, public meetings held after hours and/or on Saturdays.

The Communications Specialist job responsibilities include:

  • Oversees and coordinates assigned department communications.
  • Working effectively in a fast-paced environment on multiple, simultaneous projects to meet various deadlines.
  • Develops communications initiatives for multiple TPW Divisions.
  • Develops media and public relations materials for the department using AP Style Guidelines.
  • Researching, writing, editing, producing, and publishing content for TPW; including electronic communications, social media presence, website, and other customer education efforts.
  • Proactively communicates updates on transportation projects throughout the City.
  • Coordinating with the City's Communications and Public Engagement Office to ensure messaging is consistent with City goals.
  • Implements customer surveys to gauge performance of the programs and implement modifications to increase its effectiveness.
  • Being the primary media point of contact for multiple divisions within the department.
  • Coordinates community meetings and events with City Council and Project Managers and other senior leaders.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, journalism communications, public relations, public affairs, or related field.
  • Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in public relations, communications, marketing, or related field.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain an, valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual English/Spanish.
  • Certified Public Communicator (CPC).
  • Accreditation in Public Relations (APR).
  • Advanced Microsoft Office Suite experience with a focus on SharePoint.
