JOB DESCRIPTION

SBDC Business Advisor - Mount Pleasant, TX

Department: SBDC Job Status: Full Time

FLSA Status: Exempt Reports To: SBDC Program Director

Grade/Level: Admin/Prof I Amount of Travel Required: As needed

Work Schedule: Positions Supervised: None

Monday - Thursday 8AM - 6PM Contract Length: 6 months

Friday 8AM - 12PM

Or as assigned by the supervisor

Purpose

The business advisor for Northeast Texas SBDC will assist the center director in providing small business advising and training services to clients in Titus, Morris, Camp, Franklin, Cass and Bowie counties. Work includes publicizing the program and its services, advising clients in business principles and specific areas of business startup and management. Areas of advising may include business planning, accounting, market research, sourcing capital, human resources issues and other areas to increase business visibility.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Making sales calls and developing methods of publicizing services to attract clients and support from community business and industry leaders
  • Serve as a liaison between clients and governmental or financing institutions
  • Possess and maintain skills in business diagnosis, financing, financial management, start-up, HR, marketing, research, and other areas of operation
  • Possess and maintain high proficiency in business application software
  • Analyze company financial records and prepare composite spreadsheets
  • Conduct online research on behalf of SBDC and clients
  • Possess and maintain presentation skills for effective communication and teaching
  • Maintain a state of mobility and visibility to clients, businesses, organizations, and agencies within the six counties served
  • Maintain accurate records, adhere to strict timely reporting guidelines, develop and implement satisfaction reports for the evaluation of client success
  • Adhere to applicable laws, regulations, and policies related to higher education and grant management
  • Maintain professional appearance and demonstrate professional behavior at all times
  • Contribute to the achievement of center milestones as assigned by NTSBDC, SBA, and the center director.
  • Strict adherence to meeting performance deliverables as required and identified by federal stakeholders
  • Complete a minimum of 18 hours of professional development
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Program Director
  • Maintain confidentiality of information

Position Characteristics

This position requires extensive knowledge and experience in business operations including marketing, management, personnel, financing and financial management. The advisor must provide advice and counsel, or refer the client to appropriate resources, on all aspects of business and must adapt the style of presentation to the person or audience, whatever their level of education or business sophistication. Acting under the direct tutelage of the Program Director, the candidate must possess the ability to learn new concepts and effectively communicate them to clients. The position will involve travel within the six county service area and the business advisor must be physically capable of setting up displays and demonstration materials.

Qualifications

  • Bi-lingual, Spanish speaking desired, but not required

Five years or more of relevant experience

  • Bachelor's degree is required
  • Master's degree is preferred
  • Courtesy, tact, and diplomacy are essential elements of the job
  • Work involves much personal contact with others inside and/or outside the college for purposes of giving or obtaining information, building relationships, or soliciting cooperation
  • Must have the ability to work as a team member or independently, and relate well to clients of varied backgrounds and skill levels
  • Ability to maintain strict client confidentiality is imperative
  • Must possess familiarity with financial statements
  • Ability to work with various levels of community and government entities

This position is grant funded and relies on Federal and State budgets for continuation.
