Performance Systems Development (PSD) is looking for a Building Simulation Software Engineer to join our growing and dynamic Energy Engineering Team. We are seeking a high-performing individual with a positive can-do attitude, experienced in software development and with key strengths in energy calculations, quality assurance, data management and data analysis. What does PSD’s Energy Engineering team do?

PSD’s Energy Engineering (EE) team conducts research and data analysis, develops and tests advanced energy savings and measurement calculation methods, and deploys these methods in software products. These products are supporting the rapid scaling up of building decarbonization programs by reducing costs, increasing flexibility and adding value. Our clients and funding partners include the US Department of Energy Building Technologies Office, DOE’s national energy labs, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, and industry leading states and utilities around the country. The methods and tools developed by PSD have major impacts on how energy efficiency is being delivered nationally. PSD and our EES staff are nationally recognized for their contributions to the energy efficiency industry.

What will you do?

The Building Simulation Software Engineer adheres to best practices for software development, data management, quality assurance and data analysis. You will develop automation, prototypes, and proof-of-concepts as needed to validate and implement data analysis requirements, workflows, techniques, and methods. Analysis may include development of automation to support energy modeling, and the application of machine learning to leverage sources of modeling and usage data. You will implement software development lifecycle tasks as needed as part of the PSD Energy Engineering team, contributing to a mission-driven, creative, enjoyable, and stimulating work environment.

This position can be remote (Ithaca, NY location preferred) and has a schedule based on Eastern US Time zone.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

• Develops and unit tests data transformations, Open Studio measures, TRM energy calculations, other code to support the PSD Engineering team deliverables using Python, Ruby, SQL, R, XML, XSLT, JavaScript, or similar frameworks
• Assists in solution development process, testing/QA; maintenance; documentation; source code control; continuous integration and release management.
• Developing and executing energy modeling services engagements including large scale modeling projects
• Follows software architecture and development practices defined by PSD
• Provides data analytical services for PSD clients
• Comply with secure coding practices
• Able to work both collaboratively and independently, supported by more experienced team members
• Is organized, detail-oriented, accurate, and able to handle multiple tasks and competing priorities in a dynamic and fast-paced environment
• Participates in industry events for career development

Candidate Requirements

Need to Have

• Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or related field.
• Strong Building Science experience in multifamily buildings, or commercial plus single family
• Experience working with OpenStudio - measure authoring and model creation/review, including PAT
• Experience with scripting-based software languages (Python, Ruby) and workflows
• Some experience with software development techniques, including agile, scrum and rapid application development
• Demonstrable experience with data manipulation tools and techniques
• Strong verbal and written communication skills

Nice to Have

• Knowledge of the basic physics underlying building science and the basic engineering equations underlying energy efficiency calculations
• Experience in building energy modeling using
• Experience creating Tableau or PowerBI dashboards
• Experience in working in support of utility sponsored energy efficiency programs

Physical Demands: Frequent use of the computer requiring periods of sitting and close audio-visual concentration. Physical demands are minimal and typical of similar jobs in comparable organizations.
