TWU Position: Aircraft Maintenance Technician - DOT

This description has been designed to indicate the general nature and level of work performed by employees within this classification. It is not designed to contain or be interpreted as a comprehensive inventory of all duties, responsibilities and qualifications which may be required of employees assigned to this job classification.

Job Description

The work of an Aircraft Maintenance Technician (Mechanic) includes all work performed on an aircraft or in a shop on aircraft components. This classification includes, but is not limited to the following: troubleshooting, individually or with Crew Chief, management or under professional direction, disassembling, overhauling, checking and cleaning, repairing, replacing, testing, adjusting, assembling, installing, servicing, fabricating, taxiing or towing airplanes and/or run-up of engines.

Required to maintain the airworthiness of aircraft and all their components while in service or while undergoing overhaul and/or modification. Certifies for quality of own workmanship, including signing mechanical flight releases for all work done on field work. May have other Mechanic personnel assigned to assist him/her in completing an assignment. Will work according to FAA and Company regulation, procedures and instructions from Crew Chief or supervisor. Completes forms connected with other Company personnel as required in a manner designated by the Company.

Performs the following duties as assigned: cleaning of aircraft windshields, connecting/removing ground power and ground start units, pushing out/towing of aircraft and related wing walker functions.

Job Requirements

  • High School diploma, GED or equivalent
  • Must be able to pass Company/DOT Drug Test
  • Valid driver’s license if required
  • Airframe and Powerplant license required. FCC General Radio Telephone Operators license, if applicable
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and days off
  • Ability to read, write and fluently speak and understand the English language
  • Report to work on a regular and timely basis
  • Must fulfill FAA criminal background check to qualify for unescorted access privileges to airport Security Identification Display Area (SIDA), if applicable
  • Must be able to secure appropriate authority and/or US Customs security badges, if applicable
  • Must maintain a valid passport and the ability to travel freely to and from all of the cities served by Envoy Air
  • Must complete a Release of Information form regarding a request for previous DOT drug and alcohol test records

Essential Job Functions

Must be able to perform the following functions in variable weather and environmental conditions:

  • Stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, squat or crawl in order to work in tight, restricted spaces. (Crawl space may be as small as 15x17 square in. opening).
  • Frequent periods of prolonged standing.
  • Must maintain balance to prevent falling while climbing, moving platform stairs, using forklift and when moving around the aircraft.
  • Occasionally lift and carry aircraft parts, components and tools weighing between 6.3 lbs. and
  • 8 lbs. such as a Rivet Gun, Sheet Metal piece, Nose Tire, Rear Cargo Door, Passenger door, sheet metal piece, or control panel.
  • Occasionally push/pull items such as aircraft parts, components, tools, platforms stairs, carts holding gas tanks, tool boxes and tilt canisters with forces between 39.7 lbs. and 150.6 lbs.
  • Lift above shoulder to connect/remove aircraft equipment such as external power cable.
  • Frequent reaching above shoulder to perform tasks such as sheet metal repair, nose area avionics repair and work on the wings and tail of the aircraft.
  • Frequent reaching knee to shoulder to perform tasks such as moving stairs and platforms, repairing or refurbishing equipment on work table, rebuilding or testing avionics equipment and when repairing sheet metal.
  • Frequent reaching below knee is required when performing such tasks as checking and changing tires and filling tire nitrogen, inspecting under aircraft, and working on rudder and flap cables and electrical wiring while sitting in the belly of the aircraft.
  • Frequent seizing, holding, grasping, or turning while working using the hand or hands when manipulating manuals or log books, using hand held tools and parts, and removing/installing aircraft seats.
  • Frequent extension of the neck and upper back while performing tasks in the belly or underneath the aircraft.
  • Frequent rotation of the neck, upper and lower back when the mechanic rotates to manipulate body into aircraft openings and spaces, when working in small spaces and when moving parts in/out of the aircraft.
  • Twist, reach and lift, while using hand tools such as pliers, screwdrivers, and wrenches.
  • Move by pushing and pulling platform stands, ladders and scaffolding weighing up to 100 lbs. using between 37 and 91 lbs. of force
  • Frequent crouching, squatting, stooping and kneeling on one or two knees when performing task such as sheet metal repair inside or underside of aircraft, when working on aircraft near platform level and in confined or small spaces.
  • Drive vehicles weighing up to 10 tons in congested areas requiring good depth perception and ability to distinguish colors red, green, and yellow.
  • Pushing out/towing of aircraft involving driving vehicles weighing up to 2 tons, this requires good depth perception.
  • Work with color-coded wiring and other components, which requires the ability to differentiate colors to include but not limited to red, green, yellow, blue, black, brown, white and orange.
  • Operate a variety of tools, including power tools in the process of assembling, disassembling, repairing and installing aircraft parts and components while reaching, twisting, turning and gripping.
  • Possible exposure to high-noise level environment, dust, jet fumes and potentially toxic and/or dangerous chemicals which may affect the respiratory system, eyes or the skin.
  • Ability to wear company provided Personal Protection Equipment such as eye and ear protections and respirators as needed.
  • Ability to wear and fasten a safety harness when working above fuselage or wings
  • Occasional to frequent utilization of keyboard to view repair manuals and part requirements and record maintenance performed.
  • Read and write legibly to complete forms connected with work assignments according to established procedures.

All of the above functions are normally performed within certain narrow time constraints, which are usually dictated upon the actual arrival of an aircraft and its scheduled departure. The failure to perform these functions may result in passenger inconvenience, caused by delayed aircraft departure and passenger or employee safety. The failure to perform these functions properly may result in serious injury to passengers, employees, and damaged ground equipment and/or company aircraft.
